A Lovely Birthday

Happy birthday Toni Morrison, the first black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature--she is 79 years old today. Her beautiful novels explore the role of black women in a racist, male-dominated society, and if you didn't have to read her books in high school, you should try them out now.

"At some point in life the world's beauty becomes enough. You don't need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough." --Tar Baby, Toni Morrison's fourth novel

I read my first Toni Morrison story when I was a sophomore in college - Recitatif, which I loved. And then when I was a junior I read Jazz for my contemporary lit class, and it was my favorite of many wonderful books in that class. I think what I love about her books is that they are realistic - sometimes heartbreakingly so - but somehow there is always hope. Happy birthday Toni!

I've never read her books, but I've learned a little about her and she is a really talented person. She was an actress and singer too, and met with Martin Luther King Jr and helped the black movements.

That's really cool Lis, I didn't know (or didn't remember) that she was an actress and singer! She is an amazing person though. I remember being a little shocked when I read Sula, the only one of her books I own so far; she writes about life in such an honest way, so that sometimes it really is heartbreaking, but with truly beautiful language and characters as well.
