My Heart's a Drummer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_g3kkGH8Mo

My love for the show Glee is well known and, honestly, the cover of Don't Rain on My Parade from that show is what inspired this post; but I'm also a little bit of a purist, so this clip from Funny Girl won out.

Mostly, I was listening to the song and the lyrics (my favorite lines are in bold) and it made me think about Monday's post. Read through the lyrics, have a listen and go do something new and exciting.

Don't tell me not to live, just sit and putter
Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter
Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
Don't tell me not to fly, I simply got to
If someone takes a spill, it's me and not you
Who told you you're allowed to rain on my parade?

I'll march my band out, I'll beat my drum

And if I'm fanned out, your turn at bat, sir
At least I didn't fake it, hat, sir
I guess I didn't make it
But whether I'm the rose of sheer perfection
A freckle on the nose of life's complexion
The Cinderella or the shine apple of its eye
I gotta fly once, I gotta try once,
Only can die once, right, sir?
Ooh, life is juicy, juicy and you see,
I gotta have my bite, sir.
Get ready for me love, 'cause I'm a "comer"
I simply gotta march, my heart's a drummer
Don't bring around the cloud to rain on my parade

I'm gonna live and live NOW!

Get what I want, I know how!
One roll for the whole shebang!
One throw that bell will go clang,
Eye on the target and wham,
One shot, one gun shot and bam!
Hey, Mr. Arnstein, here I am ...

I'll march my band out, I will beat my drum,
And if I'm fanned out, your turn at bat, sir,
At least I didn't fake it, hat, sir,
I guess I didn't make it
Get ready for me love, 'cause I'm a "comer"
I simply gotta march, my heart's a drummer
Nobody, no, nobody, is gonna rain on my parade!

Saturday Snapshots

The reward for a night's hard work. It may be patchy and perhaps a bit lumpy, but he loves it so and that's all that matters.

Adoration

image from Le Love

I feel this way about a lot of people. No matter what flaws, quirks or habits they might have, I adore them. Maybe I adore them because of those flaws, quirks or habits. Maybe I adore them because they adore me for all the same reasons (believe me, I know how weird I am).

Just something to think about. Who do you adore?

Guest Post: This I Believe

Sydney lived across the hall from Miri and me a few years ago. She and I became friends and concert buddies one night when we decided to go and see a Ben Kweller concert on a whim, the first of many concerts we would attend together. For the last couple of years, I've watched Sydney do all kinds of amazing things, from running off to exotic places like India and Nepal, to organizing BYU's annual Hunger banquet. This essay was written as an entry for "This I Believe," a very cool project that just recently stopped being a radio show on NPR. Enjoy! -Megan

This I believe… The Power of Two

I believe that two people can find each other and be happy for the rest of their lives, together, forever. As an unmarried college student, I am surrounded by various theories of love. I have heard about a sort of free, non-committal love that is supposed to be threatening the youth of today. It is based on the idea that ‘monogamy is dead’ and that it is the collection of our experiences that will make us whole. But I still believe that one person will hold the key to my heart and we will find everlasting happiness in the well of life, sharing our love, saving the world, raising our kids, spoiling our grandkids and growing old together. I volunteer at a Domestic Violence shelter and have seen some awful effects of bad marriages. In my training they told me over and over again that this can happen to anyone, anywhere. Yet, I still believe that my marriage will be special and different, if I believe enough. And I have heard the divorce rates, one of every two marriages ends in divorce, it’s higher if it’s the second and even more if it’s the third. Despite these odds, my parents have been married thirty years and my grandparents have been married fifty two. Somehow, I feel exempt from it all. In the face of shattering families and broken marriage, I still believe in the power of two. This I believe.

Lovely Links

Since we are a tad busy with awesome Halloween activities and such (as you should be too), here are a few links to peruse. Enjoy!

Check out these posters. I am in love with them (I am in love with most posters, actually).

I'm also generally a fan of affirmations, because it's just nice to be reminded of good things and to take a minute and calm down when life is crazy.

Have you heard of photographer Justin Hackworth? I stalk his site because I love his photos. They are so real and beautiful. He works on a project of his called 30 Strangers where he photographs 30 people he has never met. This year, the project revolved around mothers and daughters and the photos are gorgeous. Check him out HERE.

Ever have one of those days where you just can't bear to look at yourself in the mirror (of course you have, we all have). Well, next time you are feeling down, take a look at this little gem of a blog. SEXY PEOPLE. Then go out in public with the satisfaction that you never posed for this picture.

How Lovely to be a Woman

Megan's post yesterday reminded me of this song:

It is from one of my favorite movies, Bye Bye Birdie. I love it.

Saturday Lovelies

A friend of mine shared a link to this article, Pieces of You, by Walter Kirn on Elle.com and it seemed like an appropriate thing to share.

It is an interesting article, but my feeling after reading it is that he is just skirting around the word "confidence." Be confident in who you are and you will stand out. Embrace your quirks and use them to enhance your image...people will respond.

The article also made me think of a blog I follow, The Sartorialist.

When I see the photos of people on The Sartorialist my mind goes everywhere from, "I love that dress" to "I wish I could pull that look off." But for the most part, it inspires me to focus on buying and wearing clothes that I love. You know, those pieces you try on in the store and can't bear to live without? That life changing pair of jeans or that sweater that goes with absolutely everything else in your closet? It reminds me that my closet should be full of clothes that will always make me feel beautiful...and scarves. You can never go wrong with a scarf.

I Dare You Not to Cry

I just wanted to make sure all of you out there have heard the story of Nie Nie. She is an inspiration.

She and her husband were in a plane crash last year. Their friend and pilot died in the crash and they suffered massive burns. Nie got the worst of it, but she survived and returned home to her family. I read her blog, the Nie Nie Dialogues before her life changed and I followed her progress after over on her sister's blog, C Jane Enjoy It. In fact, most of the blogging world (and the news world) followed as well. Then they went one giant step further and began organizing events and auctions to help Nie Nie and her husband pay for their medical bills.

It's really an amazing story. So amazing, in fact, even Oprah is getting in on it. So check out Nie and her family on Oprah this afternoon and enjoy feeling inspired. Also, there will be crying, so bring a hankie.

Various and Sundry Delights

An awesome print from MAGPIE lovely.
A little motivation to get moving brought to you by Annie.

Check out this lovely reminder, worn by Nie herself.

And finally, a quote that makes me oh so happy:

I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.
